Top Tips for Keeping Your Promises in 2023

A 2019 study of 800,000 activities predicts that most New Year's resolutions will be abandoned by January 19th. According to a U.S. News & World Report, about 80 percent of new year's resolutions fail and lose their resolve by mid-February. And a 2016 study determined that, of the 41% of Americans who make New Years resolutions, only 9% feel they are successful in keeping them. So why do so many people fall off the wagon year after year? In my experience, without a support framework in place, a goal can easily become a fantasy that feels unattainable. But we don't have to fall victim to the status quo! Here are my top three tips for keeping your promises to yourself in 2023!

  • Keep the vision in front of you. Put up a picture that represents your goal somewhere you can't avoid (your fridge, your bathroom mirror, your steering wheel, the lock screen on your phone). One of the top reasons people don't succeed in achieving their goals is that they simply forget about them. By keeping your vision in front of your eyes, you are programming your mind for the desired result.

  • Create a clear goal and write it down. "I will weigh 180 healthy pounds." "I will have a closer bond with my children." "I will add $10,000 to my income this year." These are all just nice dreams until we write it down. Once you've written it down, put a date on it. And finally, make your commitments public. This creates accountability, and can even attract others to you with similar intentions. This has the potential to create a community that is engaged in similar lifestyle shifts, providing the external motivation you need to create those inward changes.

  • Ditch the goal and work your plan. Having a clearly stated goal is important: all the goals from above are worthy causes. But once you've identified what you want, you'll need a plan that can get you there. Seek mentorship from those that have success in the areas that you're looking to advance - what do your daily/weekly habits need to look like to accomplish your goal in your desired timeframe? Once you have the plan in place, don't worry about your goal: staying true to the plan will bring you the goal.
